Feminist, Womanist, Equality FOR ALL

Carol Robertson, Licensed Estate Agent, Real Estate Advocate, and yes, Feminist, also known as Ms. Property.

Feminist, Womanist, Equalist. I firmly believe that we should all be treated equally and am against maintaining patriarchal systems just because it’s easier or the traditional way of doing things.

I am a member of the National Council of Women Victoria (NCWV), “founded in 1902, it’s one of the oldest women’s organisations in Victoria. It is non-sectarian and non-party political, encouraging the participation of women in all aspects of community life”  Many of its members are acknowledged feminists, regardless of which ‘wave’ of feminism they belong to.

I first heard the horrifying statistics around women over 55 becoming amongst the most disadvantaged with homelessness through the NCWV. It set me on the path to founding Ms. Property. I was already a believer in equality, an early reader of the inequities behind the ‘Animal Farm’ theme. “All animals are created equal” was not true, ever.

Feminists and Literature

I admire the NCWVs propensity to tackle problems and find solutions, fighting for the rights of women and children. Discoveries since my time as an NCWV member include how children’s literature traditionally reflects the patriarchy. Boys are the heroes and girls are the ones in need of assistance. Frustrating, once you have seen the evidence, you cannot unsee it. When you read our early school readers, particularly the early readers of my generation (Boomer here) you can clearly see the reinforcement of long-held patriarchal values.

Feminists and TV

The stories I love to read, and the series I want to watch include the anti-stereotypical Miss Fisher from Everycloud Productions who always have a strong female lead. Hopefully, we have farewelled forever, the hapless female who trips running away from the monster and completely embrace role models such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Feminists, Out and About, Always Learning

The NCWV also runs excursions to fascinating places such as the Treasury and recently to the Jewish Museum and Synagogue in St Kilda. Valuable and repeatable experiences.  Learning with the National Council of Women is ongoing, an incredible group of ‘like-minded’ women who just want everyone to be treated equally. With a wide variance in age, experience, and wealth, the NCWV demonstrates how well women work together, learn together, and strive to create a better world. We are not anti-men, by any means, we are anti-patriarchy and pro-women, pro-fair treatment for all.
